Sometimes, at a great landscape location, there is a photograph waiting to be found by looking in the opposite direction to the obvious vista. This was one of these occasions.

Coal Mine Canyon is an impressive but little-visited canyon on Navajo Reservation land in northern Arizona. After exploring the canyon rim, I settled on what I thought was the optimal view across the expanse of its multi-coloured sandstone layers for a shot at sunset. With several degrees of geo-rotation remaining before sunset, my attention turned to some of the details in the landscape, in particular this group of anthropomorphic hoodoos immediately behind me. In the cool shadows, I could see the protagonist in grey addressing a huddle of ghostly blue figures, and a crowd of onlookers, all mysteriously shrouded.

While my sunset shot was not unsuccessful, it is this unplanned image that continues to capture my imagination.
