I made this photograph in the course of A year in Torridon, a photographic project I undertook from mid-2022 to mid-2023. As luck would have it, I had to wait until the very end of winter for my many visits to coincide with a decent snowfall. I knew my trip in March would be my final opportunity to capture the landscape draped in white; with just a couple of days in hand, the weather gods finally obliged.

With only a few hours before the snow would inevitably melt at ground level, I focused my efforts on the Coulin Estate, which is always rich in photographic potential and from where this image was made in still, early-morning conditions. For one day only, Liathach (or ‘the grey one’ in gaelic), perhaps Torridon’s most iconic mountain, became ‘the white one’.
