Just an hour’s drive from Las Vegas, Valley of Fire S.P. offers tremendous potential for landscape photography, with infinite compositional possibilities to capture its stunning red and yellow sandstone formations.
I visited several times during a three-week exploration of the south-west deserts from Nevada to New Mexico, making quite different images on each occasion, with this being my final image of the trip. I had seen the potential of this composition an hour or two before sunset, with the sharp sandstone ridges in the lower half of the image (like a dragon’s scales, in my imagination) creating pleasing graphic links to the peaks beyond.
I knew I had to wait until the sun dropped to eliminate distracting highlights and reveal fully the wonderful texture of the foreground rock. Once the main scene was in full shade, the sun’s final rays continued to kiss the distant mountains for a brief moment, just long enough to release the shutter – sweet!
